Peter James Centre
Burwood I Victoria
Client : Eastern Health
Status : Completed 2017
Eastern Health engaged N2SH to undertake the Briefing, Medical and Aged Care Planning, Design and Documentation for the redevelopment of the (now) ageing facilities at the Peter James Centre in Burwood.
The brief was developed over a series of consultations with representatives of Eastern Health, PJC and various clinicians who had day-to-day involvement and interaction with the residents. The brief included: update to staff facilities; improved meeting and interview areas; expanded dining and living areas for residents including a large al-fresco deck area; six new (secure) ICA beds for at-risk residents; and separation of male and female residents due to issues of gender sensitivity, etc.
The final design sought to provide safety and security for all residents, visitors and staff, while maximizing daylight and passive observation. Diverse opportunities for “wandering” paths were created, including a pathway circulating a light-filled courtyard at the heart of the ICA Wing. Small sitting nooks and other “human” spaces are also created.
